Let's take care of

Our future

NILA was founded from the belief that we have the responsibility to decrease the pollution caused by single-use plastics and stop them from ruining our beautiful oceans.

The use of recycled ocean plastics has a positive impact on our planet; it fights the pollution of our oceans by reducing the amount of plastic. The problem is that most modern fishing nets are made of nylon, which makes the nets extremely durable and problematic when discarded. These so-called ‘ghost nets’ float around in the ocean for many years and many marine species including turtles, sharks, whales, dolphins and smaller fish become entangled in these ghost nets. Around 640,000 tons of fishing nets are lost or abandoned in the ocean each year, harming and killing marine life.

The Healthy Seas Initiative fights this problem by recovering ghost nets from our oceans and, in this way, preventing waste from ending up in the marine eco system. After recovering the nets, together with other waste from the ocean, they are transformed into ECONYL® regenerated nylon. As well as being a solution on waste, ECONYL® regenerated nylon is also better when it comes to climate change. Using recycled materials also decreases the need for materials from virgin sources. ECONYL® regenerated nylon reduces the global impact, caused in te production of nylon by up to 90% compared with the material manufactured from oil.

From beginning...

Aside from the fabric that we work with, we focus on sustainability in all aspects. Our shipping boxes are made from FSC-certified cardboard. FSC certification ensures that products come from responsibly managed forests that provide environmental, social and economic benefits.

Our postcards are made from a high quality paper of which at least 30% are recycled. The silk paper that we use in our packaging is produced in an environmentally friendly manner; it has been oxygen bleached and therefore 100% chlorine free. The hygiene liners added to our pieces are made of eco kraft-paper and our stickers are made of 100% recycled paper.

... To end

All our products come in 100% biodegradable tapioca bags. Aligned with our mission to reduce the environmental impact by reducing the of plastics we provide these bags with every order. Made from corn starch, this eco-friendly bag reduces the carbon footprint by breaking down into compostable fertilizer after disposal. Using plant-based material, this bag does not contain any harmful chemicals and releases significantly less greenhouse gas during production.

Moreover, our prints are created using eco-ink and they therefore do not contain any harmful solvents. At our production facilities further measures are taken as well. Any of the fabric waste is recycled again. The employees minimize the use of single-serving and plastics at their premises and all staff are given free metal water bottles. Next to this, they educate their staff about waste management, both at work and at home.
